CHARACTERS

SUPER MARIO CHARACTERS

MARIO-

Mario is the main character and protagonist of the long-running and highly successful Mario series. He was created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto and also serves as the main mascot of Nintendo. Mario made his first appearance as the protagonist of the arcade game Donkey Kong, released in 1981.

LUIGI-

Luigi (Japanese: ルイージ, Ruīji) is Mario's younger, taller, thinner twin brother. He is a major protagonist of the Mario series. Luigi has helped and fought alongside his brother on many occasions. Throughout his life, he has lived in Mario's shadow, developing both cowardly and heroic tendencies. Mario Bros. marks his first appearance in the Mario series and his debut in general. Originally a palette swap of Mario, Luigi was created to facilitate a second player option. Since the two-player mode was dropped from most main Super Mario games beginning with Super Mario Land, Luigi has gained his own identity and personality. This is especially noticeable in installments for the Luigi's Mansion series of games, as well as the Mario & Luigi series.

IGN score: 9.5

DONKEY KONG-

Donkey Kong, also known as DK or D.Kong,[1] is a powerful hero Kong from Donkey Kong Island (however, he has also been a villain on multiple occasions, as seen in the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series). He is a carefree ape who spends his days collecting Bananas and spends time with his friends, particularly his buddy Diddy Kong. However, when trouble arises, Donkey Kong jumps headfirst into the action to help his friends and protect his island. Cranky Kong was the original Donkey Kong, but he relinquished the name to his grandson sometime before the events of Donkey Kong Country.

BOWSER-

Bowser, sometimes known as King Koopa (Japanese: 大魔王クッパ, Daimaō Kuppa or "Great Demon King Koopa"), is the main antagonist of the Mario series and the King of the Koopa. He has repeatedly kidnapped or attempted to kidnap Princess Peach and take over the Mushroom Kingdom. He has also attempted to conquer other lands, such as the Mushroom World, Dinosaur Land, Sprixie Kingdom, and even the entire universe. Despite his villainous nature, he has occasionally helped the heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom against common threats and participates with them in their numerous sporting events in spin-off games.

YOSHI-

Yoshi (Japanese: ヨッシー, Yosshī, sometimes specified as Green Yoshi) is one of the heroes of the Mario series, an ally of Mario and Luigi, as well as the protagonist of his own series. He is a member of the Yoshi species and has aided his brethren in saving their homeland on multiple occasions. In his youth, Yoshi managed to rescue and protect Baby Mario and Baby Luigi from the wrath of Kamek and the Koopa Troop. According to Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars, Yoshi is one of the few members of his species who can speak the language of the other characters, though it seems that is not his first language, as in other games, it is needed to be translated through parentheses. In the Mario series, he is a major character and often acts as a steed for Mario, but after his own series rose to prominence, he is mostly just a playable character in the sports and party games, occasionally reappearing in the main series.

GameStation score: 9.5

WARIO-

Wario (Japanese: ワリオ, Wario) is a recurring character in the Mario series. He is an obese, muscular, hot-tempered, and greedy man, and Mario's yellow-and-purple clad arch-rival. He usually appears as an antagonist, or in some cases an anti-hero. His name is a combination of Mario's name and the Japanese word warui (悪い), meaning "bad".

Wario's greed pushes him to commit malevolent acts, such as the seizing of Mario's castle. Wario has also proven to be very cunning as he has tricked Mario on many occasions. He often goes out on his own adventures, from stealing treasure to running a microgame making company. Wario has helped heroes of the Mushroom Kingdom on a few separate occasions as well.

Wario is a creation of Hiroji Kiyotake. Some sources have speculated that Wario was created to represent Nintendo R&D1's frustration with having to work on another developer's series.

WALUIGI-

Waluigi (Japanese: ワルイージ, Waruīji) is Luigi's very tall and skinny rival, and Wario's partner. Waluigi made his debut in Mario Tennis, and since then, he has made playable appearances in many of the Mario series' spin-off titles. He has been voiced by Charles Martinet ever since his debut. His name is a portmanteau of the Japanese words, Warui and Ruīji, meaning "bad" and "Luigi". In addition, his name is an anagram to the Japanese word Ijiwaru, which can mean "ill-tempered" or "cruel".

The details of Waluigi's past are unclear since he has no confirmed background, although he has evidently been antagonizing the Mario Bros., especially Luigi, for quite some time before his debut as seen in the opening of Mario Tennis, where he and Luigi confront each other. He has a particularly strong rivalry with Luigi, who he constantly harasses, but he apparently has animosity toward most others in the Mushroom Kingdom, except for his partner, Wario.

TOAD-

Toad is a character who is Princess Peach's attendant and a long time protector of the Mushroom Kingdom. He is actually a singular character among an entire species of look-alikes (much like Yoshi is to the Yoshi species), leading to confusion over some of his appearances. He usually has the role of a supporting character who tries to help Mario and Luigi on their adventures, although he occasionally has been as a main protagonist, such as in Super Mario Bros. 2 and his starring role in Wario's Woods. He also appears regularly as a playable character in the Mario spin-offs. His role as Peach's steward has sometimes instead been given to Toadsworth.

PAC-MAN CHARACTERS

PRINCESS PEACH-

Princess Peach (casually Peach, and up until Yoshi's Safari referred to as Princess Toadstool) is the princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. Peach first appeared in Super Mario Bros. and was created by Shigeru Miyamoto to be the damsel-in-distress throughout most Mario games. She resides in her castle along with many Toads. Her kingdom is often attacked by the Koopa Troop, a group led by Bowser.

Peach has an affinity for the color pink, which accents her feminine personality and kind temperament. Peach's feminine nature and role as the damsel are often represented with her heart abilities and Princess emblems. Peach's initial design was said to represent her stubborn, yet cute, appearance.[1]

Since her debut, Peach has appeared in installments related to the Mario game series for over two decades. Peach is occasionally a supporting character in mainstream games, and almost always playable in spin-off installments. Her most prominent appearance to date is as the heroine of Super Princess Peach.

PROFESSOR ELVIN GADD-

Professor Elvin Gadd, often shortened to Professor E. Gadd, is the scientist first appearing in Luigi's Mansion and founder of Gadd Science, Incorporated. He always speaks in ambiguous gibberish (supplied by Kazumi Totaka, who took inspiration from Animal Crossing's "Animalese" when inventing the voice). His name comes from the minced oath "egad!", something that one says in amazement or shock.

PRINCESS DAISY-

Princess Daisy, or casually Daisy, is the princess of Sarasaland. Gunpei Yokoi, Shigeru Miyamoto's mentor, is often attributed as being the creator of Princess Daisy. Although Daisy is the ruler of Sarasaland, she currently resides in the Mushroom Kingdom.

Daisy is a tomboy, something first stated in her debut appearance, Super Mario Land.[1] In complement to her name, she has an affinity for flowers. Her attire, special abilities, personal emblems, and general representations are often flowers as well.

After an early hiatus, Daisy was reintroduced due to a lack of human characters in the series.[2] She appears most often as a playable character in the spin-off games. She has appeared in over forty Mario games to date, and has appeared consecutively for more than a decade.

PAC-MAN-

Pac-Man (occasionally stylized as PAC-Man or PAC-MAN, originally named PuckMan in Japan) is a famous video game character created by Namco, who debuted in the arcade classic Pac-Man to great acclaim. He has since spun-off into other games and media, making crossover appearances with the Mario series in the Mario Kart Arcade games and the Super Smash Bros. series. Other icons from his debut title have appeared in the games such as his wife, Ms. Pac-Man and his arch-enemy, Blinky.

MS. PAC-MAN-

Ms. Pac-Man is the wife of the famous Namco video game character, Pac-Man. She made her debut appearance in Ms. Pac-Man, a game originally created without the consent of the creators of Pac-Man, but eventually the rights to the character were handed over, and she has since appeared in other Pac-Man series games, becoming a staple to the series.

INKY-

Inky (Japanese: 青助 Aosuke) is the cyan (blue) ghost from the Pac-Man Series. He is often depicted as a goofy, fickle, and slow headed ghost, particularly in Pac-Man World 2 and Pac-Man World 3. His closest of his ghost friends is Blinky. Also, over time, Inky has gone from third command to second command in the ghost group.

TAIKO NO TATSUJIN CHARACTERS

DON-CHAN-

Don-chan is the main character of the Taiko no Tatsujin series, and appears as a default playable character in the arcade game Mario Kart Arcade GP DX. In the game, Don-chan is classified as a featherweight character, meaning he has average acceleration and exceptional handling, but poor speed. He also has a palette swap in the game that dresses him in a strawberry costume, known officially as Strawberry Don-Chan.

MEGAMAN CHARACTERS

MEGAMAN-

Mega Man, known as Rockman (ロックマン, Rokkuman?, from the phrase "Rock 'n Roll") in Japan, also known as Mega or Rock in his original form, is the title character of what has been referred to as the "Classic" Mega Man series developed by Capcom since 1987. The pixel art for Mega Man was created by the designer of the original game in the series, Akira Kitamura (credited under the pseudonym "A.K"), and later turned into a refined illustration by Keiji Inafune.
